Last Sunday, my Propeller Racing teammates and I traveled to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY for the 2009 Criterium New York. The race was roughly 11 miles, consisting of 12 laps around a .9 mile course. The field was small, around 12 competitors total.
Our plan was to sit in and attack on the 8th lap, dropping the pack. After finishing 7 laps, Paul attacked on the back stretch of the 8th, and Ken and I followed. After 1/4 mile, we let the tired pack catch up and regain position.

Nearly 2 years ago, my Aunt Julie was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. Aunt Julie suffered but fought through chemotherapy numerous times, but the cancer continued to spread throughout her body and eventually into her brain. Today, she lost her battle. With close friends and family around her, a priest came into the room to say a few words to my aunt, now in a coma. He told my aunt that she was free of her sins and that God was ready to accept her into heaven. 10 seconds later, she passed away.
6 weeks ago, my Uncle Bob lost his battle with cancer. Both of my family members were young, healthy and full of life. Julie is survived by 3 children and her loving husband, Michael.
Friday night, I was all prepared. Had a nice dinner, plenty of water and lights out at 10pm. My alarm was set for 5am, or so I thought.
6:40am: (*Ring, Ring*) I thrash myself out of bed and answer the phone. By the amount of sunlight coming into my bedroom, I know it’s late. “Hello?” I say. “Yooo, I’m here. Where you at?” It’s Mark and today is his first race. I glance down at my phone to read the time. It’s 6:40am and I should have already been there, getting setup and preparing for the morning race. “Shit, my alarm didn’t go off! Let me go, I’ll be there soon” I said. I jump out of bed, barely get my teeth brushed and toss on my clothes. Julie has taken the liberty of grabbing my keys and running to get my car. I grab a banana, granola bar, odawalla bar and diet coke. I shove them into my pockets, grab my bag, trainer and bike and I’m out the door. I’m banging into the walls, trying to get out of the building. As I walk out the door, Julie’s already there with my car and helping me with my bag. I’m loaded in less than 30 seconds, a kiss goodbye and Julie yells “don’t drive crazy!” Read the rest of this entry »
In 2005, I volunteered for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Association. This is where I met a shy, timid, Joseph Reisman, who would spend the next 4 years in my life. This story has been documented through my website. If you wish to follow it, please click here and start at the beginning.
Near the end of summer, 2008, Joe had been living with a family in Totowa, NJ. Over the course of this time, Joe’s grades dropped, his attitude went sour and he struggled finding himself. Near the end of his stay in Totowa, Joe was involved in a physical fight with his new family and was brought to the hospital shortly after. Joe suffered some minor bruising and pain, but was emotionally damaged.

From the April 2009, Elite Endurance newsletter:
DAVID 4th at RAHWAY CRITERIUM by Kenneth Lundgren
In the Cat-5 Rahway Criterium, Nick David of Propeller Racing placed 4th in his very first criterium. Nick’s goal was to sit back, watch, learn, and jack up his sprint at the end. For a first-year racer, Nick did an excellent job of sitting in, preserving his energy, watching attacks. He was able to wait patiently. Nick was well-placed going into the final sprint, let it loose with 200 yards to go, and was passed by one rider at the line, good enough for 4th! His teammate, Ken Zorovich, was the one who caught him, taking 3rd. Nick commented the race was an excellent learning experience and he can’t wait to cut his teeth again!
In the Cat-4 race, Nick’s teammate Aleksey Urusov, currently the Cat-4 leader in the NJ TT Cup, stayed in the top-5 the entire race, then unleashed a crushing sprint in the finale, taking the WIN by 5 bike lengths. Congrats, Aleksey!
Yesterday, my Uncle Bob unexpectedly passed away. In the past couple months, the doctors suspected that he may have developed brain cancer and was scheduled to have a biopsy early yesterday morning. After arriving at the hospital, my uncle passed through the entrance and collapsed on the floor. Sometime shortly after, he was brought into the operating room. Either during or after his biopsy, he slipped into a coma and passed away shortly after.

Two weeks ago, I watched the movie Marley & Me. As I sat through the final 20 minutes in tears, I could imagine how difficult it would be to act as the grim reaper for your dog. Being the person who drove your “best friend” to the animal hospital, only to take their life, seemed an impossible task.
Yesterday, I was the grim reaper.

Last Saturday was my first bicycle race of the 2009 season. The event took place at Sandy Hook, NJ and attracted nearly 300 competitors. The race was a 7 mile time trial. Each competitor is set off in 30 second intervals, where you race against the clock, rather than other riders. There’s no drafting allowed and the rider with the best time in 7 miles wins. Simple as that.
My alarm went off at 5:45 AM and in my tired state, I smacked the snooze button. 10 minutes later, the alarm went off again. This time, Julie was yelling for me to get up. I rushed into the kitchen and scarfed down a bowl of granola. Since I prepared my bike and packed my gear the night before, the only thing I needed to do was shower and load the car. Julie, Diesel and I were in the car and off at 6:30 AM. We stopped for some D&D coffee before heading out toward the highway.

This morning, while chatting with my co-worker, I had a flashback to my childhood. It definitely stirred up some excitement that I experienced as a kid.
